The screen is mounted on the downstream face of an intake weir. Water passes onto the screen via a specially designed acceleration plate, which provides an even distribution of flow and an increase in the water velocity. This high velocity sweeping flow down the steep face of the screen ensures that all excluded silt and debris is flushed away. The abstracted water passes through the screen and collects in a chamber beneath, which is connected to the pipeline or intake channel.
The screen allows only clean water to enter the intake system, while excluding leaves, silt particles and even fish eggs. The excluded debris remains in the river, thus eliminating any need to dispose of material.
The screens are constructed from stainless steel and made up of precisely positioned, finely spaced horizontal wedge wires, which are built into a carefully designed circular arc. The high capacity of the screen is achieved by a combination of two effects: the coanda effect, which is the tendency of fluid to cling to a surface; and the shear produced by the sharp edges of the wedge wire. Champion Coanda screens are manufactured in India and sold worldwide.
